Barnet Law Service (BLS) provides free legal advice, casework and representation at court or tribunal, primarily to people who live, work or study in the London Borough of Barnet by referral from advice agencies, CABx or other organisations.

 BLS staff

BLS was set up in 1999 with funding from Barnet Council to provide specialist legal support in the borough. BLS is a charity, and our prime object is “to relieve poor persons by the provision of legal services which they could not otherwise obtain through lack of means”, and we do this by providing Barnet residents with expert free advice in areas of social welfare law.

Our staff are particularly successful at tribunals, winning the case or achieving a favourable settlement for over 80% of their clients. You can read about some of the cases BLS has taken on in our Annual Report (5mb, pdf).

We have caseworkers or solicitors able to advise in the following areas of law:

  • Employment
  • Housing
  • Immigration and Asylum
  • Welfare Benefits
